The origins of Amsterdam are connected to the event of a dam about the Amstel River called Amestelle, that means 'watery space', from Aa(m) 'river' + stelle 'web site in a shoreline', 'river bank'.[36] On this place, land reclamation began as early since the late tenth century.[37] Amestelle was located alongside a side arm in the IJ.
